box drawings double diagonal upper right to lower left

Box-drawing double diagonal, upper right to lower left

32/686

𜰟 is a diagonal stroke from a Japanese text-screen drawing set. Unicode keeps this old character distinct so recreated Sharp MZ text can retain the same line.

Text symbol

What 𜰟 means

It helped build pictures from character cells. On a text screen, each character takes one fixed-width cell; graphic marks arranged in those cells made rough pictures. The MZ-80K, released in 1978, supported this kind of graphics.

The Japanese MZ set separated single-line diagonals in its primary set from double-line versions in the alternate set. This upper-right-to-lower-left diagonal occupied alternate display code 76. Unicode preserves the distinction for old text and screen recreations.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜰟 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
