What Ꮆ means
It represents the Cherokee syllable “lo.” It sits in the l-row: the consonant stays the same while the vowel changes.
Sequoyah developed the syllabary in the early nineteenth century to write Cherokee. The sign moved from handwriting to metal type, print, lessons and typed text while keeping its “lo” value.
The earliest archaeological reading is disputed: a 2011 study read Red Bird River carvings as experimental syllabary; a 2020 reply challenged that reading. The debate does not establish an inherited ancient Cherokee syllabary.

1Questions people ask
1Why does Ꮆ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Cherokee block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
