What Ꮅ means
Ꮅ represents the Cherokee syllable “li,” one sound-unit in Cherokee writing.
Inside a Cherokee word, it contributes one syllable; the surrounding syllables make the word that can be translated. The Cherokee syllabary is a writing system built from characters for syllables, rather than one letter for each individual sound.
Sequoyah, a Cherokee creator of the syllabary, developed the writing system between 1815 and 1821; engravings at Red Bird River Shelter support an early experimental phase. It gave Cherokee speakers a way to put their language on paper. The Cherokee Nation adopted the Cherokee syllabary in 1825, and the Cherokee Phoenix began printing it in 1828. Its role now includes language teaching: materials updated November 20, 2025, list charts, flashcards, stencils, and a Cherokee New Testament. Reports that Cherokee success influenced James Evans’s later Cree syllabics describe a connection between the projects, but the two writing systems use different shape rules.
What does it mean if someone sends Ꮅ?
By itself, it gives you the syllable “li,” not a complete word.
In a Cherokee lesson, Ꮅ may be a pronunciation example; inside Cherokee text, neighboring syllables help form the word. If someone sends it alone, ask which word or lesson they mean.
How do I type Ꮅ?
On the CLDR Cherokee-Nation layout, press the Latin l key.
That mapping belongs to this specific keyboard layout. Cherokee input systems also use transliteration, sound-based, and frequency-based conventions, so the same key may produce something else with a different input source selected.
The smaller case-paired form is ꮅ. It represents the same syllable as Ꮅ; fonts and text systems may show the two forms at different sizes.
Use Ꮅ in Cherokee text or as a clearly labeled lesson example; its meaning comes from the surrounding syllables.
“Li” is a syllable, not a full Cherokee word; read the surrounding text.

Questions people ask
1Why does Ꮅ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Cherokee block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
