Cherokee Letter No

36/92

Ꮓ is the Cherokee syllable usually romanized “no.” By itself, it names a syllable rather than giving a complete translation; inside a Cherokee word, it contributes to that word’s reading. Without a supporting font, it may appear as a square.

What Ꮓ means

It marks the Cherokee syllable no.

Cherokee writing builds words from syllable signs, so Ꮓ contributes one sound-unit; the whole word carries the meaning. “No” is a romanization, a way to represent the syllable in Latin letters, rather than a complete pronunciation guide. The other signs in the Cherokee n-series represent different syllables, not alternate styles of Ꮓ.

how was the Cherokee syllabary created

Sequoyah developed the Cherokee syllabary in 1815–1821.

The writing system gave Cherokee speakers a way to put their language on paper. Carvings at Red Bird River Shelter are interpreted as experimental evidence from the early nineteenth century. An 1828 account in the Cherokee Phoenix describes a shift from marks for whole words to signs for parts of speech, the approach used by the syllabary.

After the Cherokee Nation adopted the syllabary in 1825, its public role grew. By 1828, the Cherokee Phoenix printed law, news, religious writing, and arguments about removal in both English and Cherokee. The Cherokee syllabary also helped inspire Canadian Syllabics, a separate writing tradition. As of 2026, Cherokee sources document its use in teaching, public communication, texting, and social media.

why does Ꮓ show as a box

Your font may not include a Cherokee character for it.

The text is still present, but a device needs a font that covers Cherokee to draw Ꮓ. When the current font lacks that character, it may show an empty square. Cherokee letters do not join or reshape with neighboring letters, so a different outline comes from the font, not a change in meaning.

A Cherokee syllable used in Cherokee writing; by itself, it can label or teach the sound.
