What 吸 means
It means 吸: “inhale” or “draw something in.”
吸 is a variant of 吸, not a separate word. The Eastern Han-era dictionary Shuowen Jiezi defines 吸 as “breathing inward,” with 口 (“mouth”) as the meaning part and 及 as the sound part; later dictionaries also record drinking and taking things in.
Why does 吸 normalize to 吸?
Unicode normalization folds it to 吸.
Normalization is software’s process for standardizing equivalent text. 吸’s source entry, T6-264E, comes from Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 Chinese-text standard; its separate code lets records move into Unicode and back with the source form intact.

Questions people ask
1Why does 吸 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
