What 咢 means
It preserves a legacy character-set distinction.
HKSCS-2008 maps Big5 position A047 (extension code EE22) to 咢. Unicode identifies 咢 as its canonical counterpart and pairs it with the standardized sequence 咢︀, which adds a nonprinting variation selector to request the distinct glyph.
Unicode normalization converts 咢 to 咢, so their separate code-point identity is lost. In traditional Chinese usage, 咢 could mean a song accompanied only by drums or astonishment; early forms appear on Western Zhou bronze inscriptions.
Archival and technical: use it only to preserve this Hong Kong encoding distinction.
Normalization changes it to 咢; preserve the source character or a variation sequence if glyph identity matters.

Questions people ask
1Why does 咢 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
