What 周 means
Read it as 周; it is not a second Chinese word.
The oldest shape is disputed: one reading sees a planted field with marks; another, patterned jade. In the Shang dynasty, royal diviners carved questions on bones and shells; 周 already names a polity in those inscriptions. Later bronze forms add 口, a box-like marker for the place-name. In Chinese, 周 also means going around, the surroundings, or thoroughness.
Why does 周 have its own form?
To preserve a legacy character-set mapping and glyph distinction.
Taiwan’s CNS 11643 standard lists it as source code T6-2A3C. Unicode maps it to 周 and records the corresponding variant glyph as 周 followed by a variation selector, an invisible character that requests a specific form. This separate character lets conversion back to the source standard retain the distinction; ordinary Chinese writing uses 周.

Questions people ask
1Why does 周 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
