Historical forms of 圖 appear in inscriptions on bronze objects and in small-seal script, an early formal Chinese writing style. One interpretation reads the outer enclosure as a boundary and the inner element as settlements drawn inside it; another treats the inner element as a hint to the word’s sound. Those forms belong to 圖. Unicode included 圖 so text from Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 character-encoding standard could move into Unicode and back without losing its original code.
