What 嘆 means
It represents 嘆, a sigh or lament.
The Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE, records an older form behind 嘆 with a sighing sense. Taiwan’s 2024 spelling guidance uses 嘆 for sorrow, as in 哀嘆, and 歎 in verse, as in 詠歎.
Why is 嘆 separate from 嘆?
For round-trip conversion with Taiwan’s character set.
The source entry is T6-5136 in plane 6 of Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992, one numbered section of that character set. The extra Unicode slot lets text move to Unicode and back without losing its source form.

Questions people ask
1Why does 嘆 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
