What 暑 means
It carries the meaning of 暑: heat, hot season, and summer heat in Chinese medicine. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, glosses 暑 as “heat” and explains its structure as 日 (“sun”) plus 者, the sound-bearing component. 暑 is a separately encoded glyph form of this same character, not a second word.
Why does this form have its own code?
It preserves a CNS 11643 entry through round-trip conversion. Unicode records it as plane-6 code T6-533C in Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 and maps it to 暑. The separate code lets conversion back to that character set recover the original entry.
A legacy-data and typography form: it represents 暑 with a preserved glyph form, not a different word.
Unicode normalization can turn it into 暑 and erase the separate code-point identity.
Questions people ask
1Why does 暑 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
