What 肭 means
It is a variant of 朒, an old lunar term. Taiwan's Ministry of Education dictionary cites Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary completed in 100 CE: the moon seen east near a lunar month's start.
A 2017 report to IRG, the international Han-character standards group, says the Kangxi Dictionary (a major Chinese reference) separates this moon-component form from a flesh-component character meaning “move too quickly.”
Why does 肭 normalize to 肭?
Unicode normalization maps it to 肭. This software step standardizes text; 肭 was retained so text converted to Taiwan's CNS 11643-1992 standard could be converted back with its character mapping intact.
A 2019 review rejected reclassification because it would change an established normalization result. Keep the original text when this distinction matters.

Questions people ask
1Why does 肭 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
