What 䈧 means
It names the thin outer skin of a bamboo shoot.
The base character 䈧 appears in the Yùpiān, a Chinese dictionary compiled around 543, as “bamboo-shoot skin.” The Kangxi Dictionary also gives “bamboo skin.”
Why does it have its own code point?
To preserve a source position from an older character set.
A character plane is a numbered section of a character set. Taiwan’s CNS 11643 standard for processing Chinese text began in 1986 and expanded from two planes to seven in 1992. Unicode lists its plane-7 entry as T7-413C, allowing conversion back to CNS without losing that position.
