What 者 means
It is a dotted form of 者 meaning “person” or “one who.”
In Chinese, 者 marks a person or doer, as in 作者 (“author”); older Chinese also uses it as a grammatical particle. The dot changes the written form, not the meaning.
Taiwan's Ministry of Education's variant dictionary lists 者 as a form of 者 and cites Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary.
Unicode links it to Taiwan's CNS 11643-1992 character set. Its separate entry lets text convert to that standard and back without losing the source form.
Why does 者 change to 者?
Normalization maps it to 者, losing the glyph distinction.
The variation sequence for 者 adds UFE02 (Variation Selector-3) after it, preserving the dotted form through normalization.

Questions people ask
1Why does 者 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
