What 脾 means
It is an encoded form of 脾, meaning “spleen.” Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, calls it 土藏 (“earth organ”), linking it to a system that pairs organs with five elements. Its postface was submitted in 121 CE.
Classical Chinese dictionaries also use 脾 for an ox’s stomach; its separate bì reading means “thigh” and is linked to 髀. These are older senses of 脾.
Unicode kept this form for lossless conversion with Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 character set. Normalization maps 脾 to 脾; an invisible-selector sequence preserves its glyph when supported.

Questions people ask
1Why does 脾 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
