cjk compatibility ideograph-fa0b

CJK compatibility ideograph 廓

For the exact 廓, use its Unicode escape, <code>\uFA0B</code>, in a programming string. It is a compatibility form of 廓, the ordinary form used in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text. The extra encoded form preserves a legacy distinction between Korean readings, not a separate modern meaning.

What 廓 means

Use \uFA0B in a programming string literal.

In C, JavaScript, JSON, Java, and Python, write \uFA0B inside a string literal. Ruby uses \u{FA0B}. In HTML, use 廓 or 廓.

Why does 廓 look like 廓?

It preserves a Korean encoding distinction, not a new meaning.

The Korean standard KS C 5601, later called KS X 1001, encoded some Chinese-derived characters more than once when their Korean readings differed. Unicode kept those duplicate positions so conversion between standards could preserve the source entry. Korean Hanja references give 廓 two readings, written 곽 and 확; 廓 is associated with the latter.

The unified character 廓 appears in classical Chinese works including the philosophical treatise Xunzi and the histories Shiji, Han Shu, and Huainanzi. Its recorded senses include an outer wall or enclosure, broad or empty space, and expanding or clearing. Modern Chinese, Japanese, and Korean references retain overlapping but not identical readings and senses; Japanese entries include enclosure, breadth, emptiness, and expansion, while Korean entries record both readings.

For ordinary text, use 廓; keep 廓 when preserving the legacy source distinction matters. Unicode normalization can map 廓 to 廓. Fonts may draw the two forms similarly or fail to display one, so appearance alone cannot confirm which character is present.

Technical or archival use signals that a legacy encoding distinction matters, not a separate sense of 廓.

For ordinary prose, use 廓; normalization can collapse the distinction.

Yes. Unicode normalization can map 廓 to 廓; preserve the original form only when a system must retain the legacy encoding distinction.
