兀

cjk compatibility ideograph-fa0c

CJK compatibility ideograph FA0C

兀 is the legacy encoded form of 兀, a Chinese character linked in early Chinese writing to a head mark and later to height or projection. It survives as a Big5-era duplicate; ordinary writing uses 兀, while Unicode 17.0 normalization changes 兀 to 兀.

What 兀 means

It preserves an older Big5 character mapping.

Unicode 17.0 lists 兀 as a Big5 duplicate; Big5 was an older Chinese encoding. One account of early Chinese writing says 兀 and 元 began as one sign before separating. Later Chinese senses include standing bare or tall and being dazed; Japanese also uses it for single-minded effort.
