What 礼 means
It carries 礼’s sense of ritual propriety, respect, courtesy, or thanks.
The character family grew from Chinese ritual practice. Related early forms appear in Shang-dynasty oracle-bone inscriptions, writing carved onto bones used for divination; they referred to ritual vessels and offerings. In China's Spring and Autumn period, the idea broadened from ceremony to social order and ethics.
In Japanese, 礼 also appears in words for respect, bows, gratitude, and ceremonies.
Why can 礼 change to 礼?
Normalization can map 礼 to 礼.
Unicode includes 礼 for round-trip compatibility with older Japanese character encodings and maps it to 礼. The distinction matters most in Japanese names and older records; ordinary Japanese prose generally uses 礼.
Fonts may draw both forms alike. The standardized variation sequence 礼 followed by UFE00 (VS1) can request the Japanese glyph where supported.
Reserve 礼 for compatibility-sensitive Japanese names or older text; ordinary Japanese prose uses 礼.
Normalization can erase this distinction; preserve the exact character when it matters.
