CJK compatibility ideograph FA79

376/472

啕 maps to 啕, a Han character used in Chinese words for loud wailing; it does not add a separate word. This compatibility ideograph preserves a source distinction in a North Korean supplementary Hanja repertoire. A text-cleanup process called compatibility normalization (NFKC or NFKD) turns it into 啕.

Text symbol

What 啕 means

It carries 啕’s meaning, not a separate everyday word.

A related form, 咷, appears in the Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese dictionary submitted in 121 CE; its entry describes a child crying without stopping. Later dictionaries connect 咷, 䛬 and 啕. In current Chinese, 啕 occurs chiefly in 嚎啕 and 號啕, compounds for loud wailing. Unicode lists 啕 with source identifier KP1-39EF in KPS 10721-2000, a North Korean supplementary Hanja repertoire. The compatibility character preserves that repertoire’s distinction for round-trip interchange; it was not created as a new everyday word.

Why does 啕 become 啕?

Compatibility normalization applies its mapping.

Unicode maps 啕 to 啕 for compatibility. NFKC and NFKD use that mapping, while NFC and NFD preserve 啕. A system using NFKC or NFKD can therefore erase the source distinction in a saved or searched string.

How do I preserve 啕?

Keep it unnormalized and verify the code point.

If your input method accepts hexadecimal Unicode entry, enter UFA79; entering 啕 produces the mapped ideograph U5555. Check the stored code point after saving or importing. Fonts supply glyphs: a font without one for UFA79 may show a box even when the text still contains 啕.

Technical and archival: it preserves a source distinction during text interchange.

For ordinary Chinese writing, use 啕; NFKC or NFKD can erase 啕’s distinction.

Questions people ask

3

Is 啕 a Chinese or Korean character?

It has both contexts: 啕 is an encoding entry from a North Korean supplementary Hanja repertoire, while its mapped character 啕 belongs to the wider Chinese-character tradition.

Why does 啕 appear as a box?

The font may lack a glyph for UFA79. The text can still contain 啕; check its code point to tell whether the stored character changed.

Can I use 啕 in ordinary Chinese text?

Usually, write 啕. 啕 preserves a source distinction for text interchange; it is not a general alternate spelling in Chinese.
