CJK Compatibility Ideograph-Face

461/472

龜 is a legacy compatibility form of 龜, the traditional Han character for turtle or tortoise; “FACE” is a hexadecimal label, not its meaning. For ordinary writing, use the regional form expected in that language. Text normalization may replace 龜 with 龜.

Text symbol

What 龜 means

It is a turtle character, not a facial expression. 龜 is a compatibility form of 龜, the traditional Han character for a turtle or tortoise. “FACE” comes from hexadecimal code-point naming, so it is not an English gloss. This form was encoded for legacy CJK interchange, not as an everyday symbol.

A recognizable form of 龜 appears in oracle-bone writing from late Shang China, around 1250–1200 BCE. Diviners heated turtle shells and recorded questions and outcomes about weather, hunts, births, battles, and royal affairs. That ritual history belongs to 龜; 龜 is a much later interchange encoding of the inherited character.

Why can its appearance or stored form change?

Fonts and text processing can change what you see or store. CJK font selection can change how 龜 looks, and a font without its glyph may show a fallback or missing-character box. Unicode normalization—a text-processing step that replaces compatible forms with unified characters—may rewrite 龜 as 龜, keeping the turtle character but changing the code point.

The turtle’s cultural associations extend beyond its basic animal meaning. A Chinese inkstone shaped like a turtle, dating from the 6th–7th century, links turtle imagery with longevity, endurance, and divination. A Japanese court gift from the Meiji period (1900) pairs turtles and cranes as symbols of longevity.

Technical and archival; use it when a legacy encoding must be preserved, not as a casual turtle character.

“FACE” is hexadecimal, not a face: 龜 names a turtle character, not a facial reaction.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 龜 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
