What ㇢ means

Search a Unicode-aware picker for “CJK Stroke PG” or “piě gōu.”

Ordinary pinyin word entry will not resolve this stroke label as a word.

In source code that accepts Unicode escapes, enter \u31E2.

What does ㇢ mean?

It names 撇鉤, a left-falling stroke that ends in a hook.

撇鉤 is the Mandarin name, written in pinyin as piě gōu; PG comes from the initials of those two syllables. It names a stroke form, not an independently read word. Han characters are used in Chinese and also in Japanese and Korean writing.

Why was ㇢ encoded?

It helps index and sort Han-character forms.

Stroke tokens let technical indexes describe Han-character structure, including forms that do not have an encoded whole character of their own. The broader CJK stroke inventory includes traditional forms attested in representative Han characters, with some source examples from before Chinese writing was unified. Unicode distinguishes a stroke token from a full character or a radical.

Regional CJK font conventions can draw related forms differently, making a stroke component look closer to another character without changing the token’s identity.

Technical and niche: ㇢ signals stroke analysis or character indexing, not ordinary prose.

Read PG as a stroke label, not as a word or chat reaction.
