What 精 means
Think “refined essence”; the complete word supplies the meaning. Mandarin reads 精 as jīng, commonly typed as jing without the tone mark. In 精密 it means precise or finely detailed; in 精神 it concerns the mind, spirit, or energy.
An early meaning was selected, high-quality rice: 精 appears that way in the Analects, a classical Chinese text. The Han-era Shuowen Jiezi, an early dictionary, explains it as selected rice. Its traditional analysis treats 米 as the meaning component and 青 as the sound component; those roles do not make the character a picture puzzle. These references anchor its early history but do not date its first appearance.
Does 精 mean the same thing in Japanese?
The meanings overlap, but the complete words and readings differ. In Chinese and Japanese, 精 appears in words about refinement, precision, mental energy, reproductive essence, and supernatural beings. The whole word matters: 精密 means precise or detailed, 精子 means sperm, and 精神 can refer to mind, spirit, or energy.
Japanese compounds may read 精 as せい (sei) or しょう (shō, also written shou). The complete Japanese word determines the reading and sense; do not read every instance as Mandarin jīng.
What if someone sent only 精?
Ask which word they meant before guessing the message. 精 alone could point to refinement, energy, a spirit, or reproductive essence. It can mean semen in Chinese and Japanese vocabulary, but that dictionary sense does not prove a sexual message. Ask for the full word or the language.
Chinese internet slang also puts 精 after a trait or behavior to label a person; this pattern was documented in 2021. The force belongs to the whole label, not to 精 by itself.
精 takes its tone from the word around it: technical vocabulary, spiritual language, biology, or a pointed label.
A bare 精 does not prove the sender means semen.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 精 look different in Chinese and Japanese fonts?
Regional fonts can draw the shared character's strokes differently. Unicode encodes the character identity, not one fixed regional drawing; a font variation does not create a new character or meaning.
