What 紏 means
It has two historical readings with different uses.
In Mandarin, tǒu (roughly “toe,” with a low-then-rising tone) is associated with yellow silk. 糹 is the silk component, while 斗 hints at the sound; 黈 and 斢 are recorded as variants for this reading.
The other Mandarin reading, jiǔ (roughly “jyeo,” with the same tone), treats 紏 as a variant of 糾, an older character for joining or correcting. The early dictionary Shuowen Jiezi has no entry for 紏; the Yupian dictionary tradition records it by 543. That dates the surviving record, not the character’s invention.
Historical and specialized; it fits quotations or discussion of the character.
Without surrounding words, the intended historical reading is unclear.
