Toad

14847/20992

蟾 means “toad”; classical Chinese writing also uses it to evoke the moon, where tradition placed a toad. Its cultural uses include literary moon imagery, an old exam-success idiom, and the prosperity figure 金蟾. A lone 蟾 is too literary to read as plain animal wording.

What 蟾 means

蟾 means “toad”; in classical Chinese, it can also evoke the moon. The moon reading comes from the traditional image of a toad living there. In ordinary Chinese, 蟾蜍 is the usual word for the animal; bare 蟾 is literary.

A possible early lunar clue is the Warring States-era poem Tianwen (“Questions to Heaven”), which asks what lives in the moon; its term 顾菟 is disputed between rabbit and toad readings. By c. 163 BC, a T-shaped silk banner from the Mawangdui tombs showed a toad in the moon section of a scene meant to summon a dead person's soul. Han tomb art also paired the moon toad with a rabbit, while a golden crow represented the sun.

Why can 蟾 refer to the moon?

The moon sense comes from a toad imagined inside the moon. Han-era explanations linked the toad and rabbit with yin and yang, the complementary forces used to describe cosmic balance. One comparative account also records moon-toad stories in the Solomon Islands and some Indigenous American traditions; these are parallel motifs, not evidence of borrowing.

By the Tang–Song period, 蟾宫 (“toad palace”) referred to the moon palace, and the phrase about plucking a laurel from that palace became a literary expression for success in the imperial examinations, the state tests used to select officials. A Taiwanese woodcarving catalogued in 1998 shows a three-legged 金蟾 as a prosperity figure. These compounds carry distinct readings; the bare character does not automatically carry them all.

What does 蟾 mean in a message?

The phrase around it decides which allusion is active. If someone sends only 蟾, treat it as a fragment from a poem, idiom, or name, and ask which one they mean. The character alone leaves the reference underspecified.

Literary and allusive; bare 蟾 belongs mainly in poetry, set phrases, and cultural references.

For the animal in ordinary prose, 蟾蜍 is clearer; bare 蟾 can sound archaic or moon-coded.

Why does 蟾 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
