What 覮 means
It means bewildered; another reading is tied to “clean.”
In Mandarin, the “bewildered” sense is pronounced roughly like “ee-ng,” with the voice dipping and then rising; the same syllable with a rising tone is linked to “clean.” The related 䁝 entry also uses the first reading for eyes described as clear and bright.
How did 覮 take this form?
Its early dictionary trail runs through 䁝 in the Shuowen tradition, an early Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100–121 CE.
Traditional character analysis explains 覮 with an eye element and a shortened form of 熒 used for sound; its commentary links wavering firelight with bewilderment.
The commentary also says older texts used 營 in place of 䁝. Later dictionaries describe 覮 as a variant, a historical link that does not make the forms interchangeable in modern writing.
What should I assume if someone sends 覮 alone?
Ask for the surrounding sentence before assigning it a tone.
It could be a dictionary quotation, a classical-text excerpt, or a question about the character itself. Its recorded senses do not tell you whether the sender means confusion, cleanliness, or something else.
Its recorded glosses are dictionary material; in a message, the glyph alone does not tell you which sense is intended.
