CJK Ideograph 詮

15471/20992

詮 means to explain or clarify something fully — search it as quan in Mandarin or sen in Japanese. Chinese uses it in words for interpretation, while Japanese compounds stretch it toward conclusions, investigation, or futility. The early Shuowen Jiezi entry describes it as speech (言) made complete, with 全 giving the sound.

What 詮 means

It means making an explanation complete or clear.

The earliest evidence I found is the Shuowen Jiezi entry around 100 CE; it defines 詮 as 具 and builds the character from 言, the speech component, plus 全 as the sound component. Its original job was explanatory: to set out a matter fully.

There is no single inventor. The same written form entered different word systems: Chinese keeps the explain-or-clarify sense under quan, while Japanese uses the sen reading for conclusions, means, and payoff.

Is 詮 the same in Chinese and Japanese?

No: the core idea travels, but compounds change the reading.

In Chinese, 詮 centers on explaining or interpreting. In Japanese, the surrounding word can turn it into investigation, the final point, or futility. Read the whole word before choosing an English gloss.

A lone 詮 gives too little context to decode confidently. Copy it from the palette above when you need the traditional form, and choose 诠 only when you mean simplified Chinese.

Use it inside an established Chinese or Japanese word; alone, it feels like a dictionary headword or an unfinished message.

If someone sends only 詮, ask for the surrounding word before reading it as “explanation” or “futility.”

It can. Han fonts follow regional style conventions, so stroke details may differ without changing the surrounding word or language.
