Character 誇

15496/20992

誇 can mean bragging or praise in Chinese, and pride in Japanese. In Mandarin, 誇耀 is bragging while 誇獎 and 誇讚 praise; Japanese 誇る can mean taking pride in something. By itself, 誇 does not settle the tone.

What 誇 means

It can mean bragging, praise, or pride; the language and compound decide.

In Mandarin Chinese, 誇 can mean bragging or boasting, but it also appears in words of praise. An older dictionary sense is “large” or “coarse”; in modern writing, the compound makes the practical difference clearer.

The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100–121 CE, already gives 誇 a gloss. The graph is phonosemantic: 言 marks its speech-related side, while 夸 contributes the sound.

Why can 誇 mean praise or bragging?

Language and compound can turn praise into bragging, or the reverse.

In Traditional Chinese, 誇耀 means excessive boasting; 誇獎 and 誇讚 are praise. 誇張 means exaggeration, including deliberate rhetorical overstatement. It can describe a figure of speech without itself accusing a writer of lying.

In Japanese, 誇る can mean to boast or take pride in something; 誇り means pride. The same graph therefore does not carry one tone across both languages.

What should I infer if someone sends 誇?

Alone, 誇 does not settle praise versus boasting.

Check the language and the full word before reading a tone into it. In Mandarin, the compound may praise or brag; Japanese 誇る can express pride. If 誇 was sent by itself, ask what the sender meant rather than assuming praise or an insult.

The tone swings with the compound: Mandarin ranges from praise to bragging, and Japanese also uses 誇 for pride.

A bare 誇 is not automatically praise, arrogance, or an insult; check the language and word.

1

Why does 誇 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
