Shang variant

15659/20992

謪 is a literary variant of 商 meaning “weigh or assess”; a 2026 dictionary entry also gives “discuss,” as in 謪議. The Warring States text Xunzi uses related 謫 for weighing virtue before assigning rank.

What 謪 means

Yes: 謪 is a written variant of 商.

商 appears in inscriptions from the Shang and Western Zhou periods, not as a separate 謪 form. Taiwan's 2024 Ministry of Education variant-character dictionary says the early lexicon 說文 omits 謪 and cites the fragmentary dictionary 玉篇零卷 and later dictionaries.

In Xunzi, a Warring States text, the line reads 謫德而定次: “weigh virtue and assign rank.” Its commentary equates 謫 with 商; some copies use 譎. Since 謪 is a 商 variant, the passage illustrates its old assessment sense.

A literary variant; use 商 in ordinary modern writing.

1

Why does 謪 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
