What 诈 means
It means deliberate deception. In Mandarin Chinese, it can label a person, claim, or tactic; the surrounding word specifies the act.
Bronze inscriptions from China's Spring-and-Autumn period are the earliest recorded evidence. The Han-era Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, glosses 詐 as 欺也 (“to deceive”); compounds apply that broad idea to specific acts such as swindling and feigning.
If someone sends only 诈, it can sound accusatory; compounds are more formal.

1Why does 诈 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
