What 頪 means
Two old glosses: “hard to understand” and “fresh, bright-white appearance.” The Shuowen Jiezi, an early dictionary of individual Chinese characters, records both.
They are separate classical definitions, not one settled everyday meaning. Read the surrounding passage to decide which gloss belongs; without enough context, leave the interpretation open rather than forcing a modern one-word translation.
Where was 頪 first recorded?
Its earliest known dictionary entry is in the Shuowen Jiezi.
That work is an early Chinese dictionary of individual characters. It was completed in 100 CE, then its final draft was submitted to the Han emperor in 121 CE.
The dictionary analyzes the written form as 米 (rice) and 頁 (the head component), and connects the white gloss with a shortened form of 粉 (“powder”). In 類, it analyzes 犬 as the meaning part and 頪 as the sound part; in 纇, 糸 (“silk thread”) supplies meaning while 頪 supplies sound.
Historical and dictionary use; don’t substitute it for 類 in ordinary Chinese writing.
For “kind” or “category,” write 類. 頪 may prompt a lookup instead of a fluent reading.

1Questions people ask
2is 頪 the same as 類
No. 類 is the ordinary character for “kind” or “category.” Traditional analysis links it to 頪 through sound, but their meanings and uses differ, so write 類 for that everyday word.
why does 頪 show as a box
A font without this CJK glyph can show a box or replacement mark. Try displaying the text with a font that supports 頪; the box alone does not change which character the text is meant to contain.
