What 類 means
It groups by kind and connects things through likeness. In Classical Chinese, 類 also means “generally” and names a ritual offering to Heaven that involved sacrificing a dog.
Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary, explains 類 through dogs of similar kinds: 犬 (“dog”) supplies a meaning clue, while 頪 supplies a sound clue in its analysis. Written examples survive on Qin slips—narrow pieces used for writing—and Shuowen also records a small-seal form, an older style of Chinese writing.
