Chinese character variant for leg

19646/20992

骽 is an older Chinese variant of 腿, the usual word for “leg”; early glosses narrow it to “thigh.” In a text, read it as a body-part word in an older spelling. 腿 is the ordinary modern form.

What 骽 means

骽 is a historical variant of 腿, “leg.” A Buddhist pronunciation glossary compiled around 987 uses 两骽, glossing 骽 with 股 (“thigh”) and identifying 腿 as the common form.

The 1955 First List of Processed Variant Chinese Characters lists 腿 as the preferred form and places 骽 in brackets. Modern dictionaries link them as variants; 腿 also names a furniture leg.

Why does 骽 show as a box?

It can. This varies by font: a font without 骽 may show a missing-glyph box. That box is a display fallback, not a different reading.
