Aruba flag emoji 🇦🇼: how it works and what the flag means

The Aruba flag emoji is not a single picture in Unicode. It is two regional indicator letters, A and W (Aruba's ISO country code), which phones and apps draw together as the flag. Most country flags, Aruba's among them, arrived as emoji in 2015. On a system without flag support (Windows' own emoji font, for example) you see the letters AW instead; the text underneath is the same, so it still shows as a flag on the reader's phone.

The flag itself was adopted on 18 March 1976: a light blue field, two thin yellow stripes near the bottom and a red four-pointed star with a white border in the upper corner. The usual reading is blue for the sea and sky around the island, yellow for the sun and abundance, and the star for Aruba itself, its four points facing the four directions its people came from, red for love of the country and white for the beaches. 18 March is still National Anthem and Flag Day, when fills every feed. There is no red-star emoji, so people paste the flag colours as hearts , or use the text star for the star.

Owl stands in for the shoco, Aruba's small burrowing owl, which lives in holes in the ground of the island's dry interior and is one of its best-known bird emblems. is the nearest emoji to the divi-divi (watapana) tree: the constant trade wind from the northeast bends these trees so that they all lean toward the southwest, and they appear on postcards, logos and souvenirs as the picture of Aruba.

Cactus is no stereotype here. Outside the hotel strip Aruba is dry and rocky, with tall columnar cacti (kadushi, which also goes into a soup) and the protected landscape of Arikok National Park . Flamingo is the emoji of countless holiday photos, thanks to the flamingos that walk the beach of a private island off the coast. Lizard covers the island's many iguanas and its bright blue whiptail lizard, the kododo blauw, and and are the goats roaming the hills and the donkeys of the island's donkey sanctuary.

Beach, sea and wind: the emoji of an Aruba holiday

Eagle Beach and Palm Beach are among the island's best-known draws, so and (sunset over the sea) are popular Aruba emoji alongside the flag. Aruba's currency is the Aruban florin (code AWG), introduced in 1986 and divided into 100 cents. The Central Bank uses Afl. in its official publications; ƒ is also used as the florin sign, so a price can appear as Afl. 25 or ƒ 25.
