What ︤ means
It starts a line above a run of letters.
In Coptic, this half macron begins a supralinear stroke—a line above the letters—that marks certain common words and highlights divine or heroic names. Coptic abbreviation bars follow a separate edge-to-edge convention.
A 2007 encoding proposal shows Coptic examples from a 1911 edition of Coptic material and related joining bars in medieval Portuguese manuscripts, where they abbreviate Latin words such as nomine, omne, and morabitino. It also considered applying the method to Latin, Greek, Georgian, and Cyrillic writing.
How do I use a half macron?
Place it after the first letter in a complete sequence.
For two letters, put ︤ after the first base and ︥ after the second: a︤b︥. For a longer run, put ︦ after each interior base: a︤b︦c︥. Combining marks follow their base in encoded text, even when they display above it.
This specialized mark is not a free-standing overline. Unicode warns that longer runs can render poorly in plain text; styled text gives the line controlled layout.
Technical and archival; in Coptic text, it suits an edition that preserves manuscript strokes.
Alone, ︤ is an unfinished opening mark.

1Why does ︤ look like a floating mark?
It is an opening half, so alone it has no closing span to join. An incomplete sequence or weak font support can leave it detached; include the matching marks and use a font that supports them.
