What 𐋥 means
It means five; larger signs come first. Values add: 𐋫 followed by 𐋥 is 25. The set has separate signs for units, tens, and hundreds, but no zero.
In Arabic, the system is called ḥurūf al-zimām (“register letters”). It developed in Egypt in the 10th century from handwritten Coptic letters used as numbers. Egyptian Christians used it for business records; Muslim and Jewish communities used it in Arabic accounts, astronomy, calendars, and page numbering.
Manuscripts dated 1290–1748 show local variants, some shaped by nearby Arabic letters. Even in right-to-left Arabic, a number sequence reads left to right.
