What ⲷ means
No. It replaces ordinary Eie, ⲉ, inside a cipher. Common Coptic substitution left frequent ⲉ unchanged; ⲷ concealed it as a separate character, not a font variant.
Greek cryptography appears at the Colossus of Memnon, a statue in Egypt, in the 2nd century CE; Coptic systems developed from that tradition. Its method is compared with the Jewish Atbah cipher, not the reverse-alphabet Atbash cipher.
Encrypted Coptic appears in magical formulas, medical recipes, monastic prayers, scribal colophons (copyists’ notes), and private messages. Examples survive in books, on walls, and on ostraca (pottery flakes used for writing), including finds from desert sites.
A marker of historical Coptic cipher writing, not ordinary spelling.
For ordinary Eie, use ⲉ.
