Dense Horizontal Fill

70/686

𜱅 is a solid horizontal fill tile for early computer graphics. Text-mode programs used it to fill a band by arranging character-sized cells instead of drawing every pixel.

Text symbol

What 𜱅 means

It fills a horizontal strip in a screen graphic.

The 2021 source table maps it to Robotron Z9001 and Sharp MZ's European alternate display set, a separate bank of on-screen shapes rather than keyboard characters.

Added to Unicode in 2024, it may appear as an empty box in fonts that lack its glyph.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜱅 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
