What 𜱆 means

Enter the Unicode hex value in an app that supports it. In Microsoft Word, type 1CC46 and press Alt+X. In GNOME text entry, press Ctrl+Shift+U, type 1CC46, then press Enter.

What did Speckle Fill Frame 1 do on a Sharp MZ?

It is the first image in a two-frame animation. A Sharp MZ home computer stored ready-made shapes—a character set—that programs could place in screen cells to build simple graphics. In the Sharp MZ European alternate display set, a bank of extra screen shapes, this pattern occupied hexadecimal EE; frame 2 followed at EF. They were meant to appear in sequence, but the characters themselves stay still unless software switches between them.

Why does Speckle Fill Frame 1 appear as a blank box?

The selected font may not include a drawing for it. If it appears as an empty box or placeholder, the font in use cannot draw this character. The text still contains the same character; a font with its glyph is needed to show the speckled shape.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜱆 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
