Devanagari Head Mark With Headstroke

𑬁 is a Jaina manuscript mark for an auspicious opening or invocation, not a routine sentence stop. In the bhale mīṇḍu tradition, it can begin a group of signs that ends with a double danda. Its headstroke distinguishes it from the plain head mark 𑬀.

What 𑬁 means

A Jaina benediction mark, not ordinary punctuation.

Jaina manuscripts typically place a head mark first. The headstroke form 𑬁 is a deliberate variant of plain 𑬀; it can introduce a blessing, while the double danda ॥ marks a textual boundary.

The wider bhale mīṇḍu family appears in Jaina manuscripts and inscriptions. A related primitive bhale form is documented from the 13th century; the proposal cites 𑬁 in the Jain work Jñātādharmakathā and the phrase ॥𑬁॥ in a copy of Sukhabodhikā from the 19th century. These examples show use by then, not the headstroke form’s first appearance.

Why is 𑬁 used in Jain manuscripts?

It opens an auspicious Jaina-text formula.

In the fuller bhale mīṇḍu construction, the head mark comes first, a bhale sign follows, and a mīṇḍu closes the group; the double danda often frames it. These names refer to the signs’ parts, not spoken words.

A 1892 catalogue called the diagram an invocation. A 2000 study linked the signs’ origin to Siddham, another script. The origin remains debated; their auspicious role in Jaina texts is clearer.

What if someone sends 𑬁 alone?

Treat it as a reference to Jaina text tradition.

A message containing only this mark points to Jaina manuscript symbolism, but it does not reveal why the sender chose it. Ask for context before assigning it a personal message.

Specialist and sacred-textual; in ordinary Devanagari writing it signals a Jaina source or a deliberate quotation of one.

Don’t use it as decorative punctuation.

Questions people ask

2

Why did an old catalogue use ए for this sign?

A 1936 catalogue used ए as a typesetting substitute when a dedicated type punch was unavailable. It was a printing workaround, not a different identity for this symbol.

Why does 𑬁 show as a box on my screen?

A font may not include a design for this Unicode character, so the screen can show a box or blank. That display problem does not change which text character is present.
