devanagari head mark

Devanagari Head Mark

𑬀 is the head mark that opens the Jain benediction called bhale mīṇḍu; alone, it is only the opening part. This sign family appears in western and central Indian inscriptions and manuscripts from the 11th century onward, while its use in northern Devanagari had diminished by the 17th century. It resembles ॥, but the two signs are distinct and can appear together.

What 𑬀 means

It opens a Jain manuscript with a benedictory sign.

A Jain manuscript is a handwritten religious text. In this tradition, 𑬀 typically comes first, before an invocation or the remaining parts of a bhale mīṇḍu, a multi-part benediction. It is the opening component, not the whole blessing or an ordinary sentence divider.

The broader sign family is attested in western and central Indian inscriptions and manuscripts from the 11th century onward. By the 17th century, use in northern Devanagari had declined while Jain manuscript use continued in western and central India. These dates mark surviving use, not a precise invention date.

Why is it confused with the double danda?

They look similar, but they are separate signs.

Both have paired vertical strokes, but 𑬀 has a diagonal extension and opens a benediction; ॥ is the double danda. Manuscript examples can show both, so keep each distinct in a transcription.

The older Devanagari sign ꣼ is associated with siddham. It serves a related benedictory function but is structurally and graphically distinct from 𑬀.

What does 𑬀 mean when someone sends it alone?

Read it as an opening mark, not a complete blessing.

On its own, 𑬀 shows the start of the benedictory pattern; the rest of the sequence or its surrounding text supplies the fuller reading. For a historical transcription, preserve the mark and any neighboring signs as written.

Formal and religious: it marks a Jain manuscript's benedictory opening.

Do not replace it with ॥; manuscript examples can contain both.

Questions people ask

3

Is 𑬀 the same as ॥?

No. 𑬀 is a benedictory head mark; ॥ is the double danda. Manuscript examples can place them together.

Can 𑬀 stand for the whole blessing?

No. It opens the sequence; an invocation or the other parts of the benediction complete the manuscript pattern.

Why does 𑬀 look different in different apps?

It can. This is a font-rendered text character, so the selected font supplies its strokes. A different appearance alone does not mean the encoded character changed.
