What ⋄ means
The notation defines the operation. A binary operator sits between two inputs, as in p ⋄ q. LaTeX's \diamond command provides this operator. MathML, a format for computer-written mathematics, treats ⋄ as an infix operator: it sits between its inputs.
The possibility sign has a separate history: the logician C. I. Lewis developed modal logic across 1918, 1920, and 1932. Those milestones belong to modal notation, not to ⋄.
Technical notation, with meaning set by the mathematical system.

4Questions people ask
1Why does ⋄ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
