duployan affix low arrow

Duployan low arrow affix

In Romanian Duployan shorthand, 𛲙 stands for the prefix sub-, meaning “under” or “below.” Duployan is a way to write speech quickly with compact signs. The system later traveled beyond French, including into Indigenous-language writing in British Columbia.

What 𛲙 means

French shorthand was later adapted into Romanian.

Émile Duployé published the French shorthand in 1860 to record speech quickly. In interior British Columbia, Catholic priest Le Jeune adapted it for Chinook Jargon, a regional trade language, and Indigenous languages; the Kamloops Wawa used that writing from 1891 to 1923. Henri Stahl published a Romanian adaptation in 1898. Margareta Sfințescu's Romanian stenography course appeared in 1984.

Specialist stenography; this belongs in Duployan writing, not everyday Romanian spelling.
