What 𛱓 means
In Perrault’s English shorthand, Xw marks the short “uh” vowel.
French Duployan has a separate sign for “eu”.
Émile Duployé published his shorthand in 1860 to write French quickly.
How did Duployan spread beyond France?
It became the basis for separate systems in other languages.
In 1890, Catholic priest Jean-Marie Le Jeune adapted it in British Columbia; missionaries considered its strokes easier to teach across languages. Local learners used it for Chinook Jargon, a regional trade language, and other Indigenous languages.
The newsletter Kamloops Wawa, mostly in Chinook Jargon, ran from 1891–1923.
