What ⶬ means
It contributes one syllable to Bench spelling.
Ethiopic writing developed from an older South Arabian script that wrote consonants; it later gained syllable signs, first for Ge’ez.
A 1998 proposal says the four Bench retroflex series—sounds made with the tongue curled back—were proposed as early as 1981, used in publishing for at least ten years, and introduced in schools in 1994.
