What ዼ means
It marks a syllable, not a complete word.
Ethiopic writing serves several languages, including Amharic, Tigre and Oromo. A lone ዼ does not supply enough text for a translation; the surrounding word determines how the sign contributes.
Where did Ethiopic writing come from?
It grew from South Arabian writing, adapted for Ge’ez.
South Arabian writing reached the Horn of Africa around the end of the first millennium BCE and was adapted for Ge’ez, a Semitic language of the region. The earliest known inscriptions in the Ethiopic tradition date to the 5th century BCE. By the 4th century CE, Ge’ez writing had developed into a left-to-right syllabary: its signs included vowels as well as consonants. The script also serves Amharic, Tigre, Oromo and other languages.
