What ዹ means
It is a spelling unit, not a word with its own meaning. Ethiopic cells represent consonant-and-vowel syllables, so ዹ belongs in the spelling of a word. It is a text character, not an emoji. The doubled letters in Unicode’s label “ddu” distinguish the name; they do not tell you how to pronounce it.
How did Ethiopic writing develop?
It grew from South Arabian writing and gained vowel marking over time. Inscriptions from the 8th/7th century BCE provide early evidence; a clearly recognizable Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the 2nd/3rd century CE. By the 4th century, vowel marking had established the familiar system of consonant-and-vowel cells.
The script began as a way to write Ge’ez, an ancient language of the Horn of Africa. It later served Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre, while Ge’ez retained a role in religious services.
