What ꬖ means
It writes the dzo syllable in Gamo-Gofa-Dawro Ethiopic text. Alone, it has no reliable social message.
The wider Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second or third centuries CE; that does not date ꬖ. A 2009 proposal places ꬖ in the Gamo-Gofa-Dawro series, whose added signs were intended to record local sound distinctions and preserve existing books. It also notes that churches continued publishing in Ethiopic while government literacy policy promoted Latin.
If ꬖ appears as a box, the font lacks its glyph; a font covering Ethiopic Extended-A can display it. Unicode chart drawings are examples, so the same character can look different across fonts.
