What ꬦ means
It represents one spoken syllable in Gumuz writing.
South Arabian writing reached Tigray in northern Ethiopia around the eighth century BCE and developed into the Ethiopic script. By the fourth century CE, its consonant letters had become syllable signs pairing consonants and vowels; ꬦ is a later Gumuz addition.
A 2009 Unicode proposal shows ꬦ on a page from a 2003 Gumuz New Testament. It says churches kept publishing Ethiopic books while language groups chose Latin, making digital reproduction important.
