What ል means
It is the sixth form in the Ethiopic l-series. The series pairs l with different vowels; ል appears in words.
South Arabian settlers and stoneworkers from Sana’a and Marib brought Sabaean writing to the Horn in the eighth century BCE. As of 2026, the Axum site reports Dakhanamo as its earliest Ethiopic-alphabet attestation. Around the fourth century CE, vowel marks reshaped the consonant alphabet into consonant-vowel forms for royal inscriptions and Ge’ez religious texts; Amharic and Tigrinya also use the script.

1Why does ል show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
