What ጾ means
Use an Ethiopic keyboard layout.
In Latin letters, the syllable is commonly transliterated “tso.” On the Keyman Ge’ez Berhan 1.0 layout for US English QWERTY, press x, then o. That sequence is specific to this layout; other Ethiopic keyboards use different key maps.
What does ጾ mean?
It writes one syllable inside an Ethiopic word.
Ethiopic writing combines consonants and vowels into syllable forms. ጾ is the o form in the series that begins with ጸ; changing the vowel changes the syllable, while the complete word supplies the meaning.
The script first served Geʾez, a classical Ethiopian language, then was adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre. As of 2026, Geʾez remains in liturgical use. The oldest records from Ethiopia and Eritrea, dated to the 8th/7th centuries BCE, use South Arabian writing that records consonants but not vowels. A clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second/third centuries CE; adapted for Geʾez from South Arabian writing, it developed syllable forms combining consonants and vowels by the fourth century. The older inscriptions are not ጾ in its present form.
Someone sent me ጾ—what should I do?
Ask for the full word or its language.
One syllable alone does not identify the word or language the sender intended. Read ጾ within its full word before translating it.
