What does ዛ mean?
It is the fourth vowel form in the Ethiopic z series. In Latin-letter transliteration it is commonly written zā or zaa, roughly “zah” with a longer a; exact pronunciation varies by language. Read it inside a word: ዛ contributes a syllable, while the language and surrounding letters supply the word’s meaning.
The Ethiopic script is used to write Ge’ez, Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigré, and other languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea. By itself, ዛ does not name a complete word.
How did the Ethiopic script develop?
It grew from older Red Sea writing into a vowel-marked script. The Aksum archaeology project identifies Dakhanamo, a site in northern Ethiopia, as the earliest attested site for the Ethiopic alphabet in its account. In the first millennium BCE, inscriptions in the region include Sabaic, an ancient South Arabian language, written in musnad, a South Arabian inscriptional alphabet.
The Ethiopic script developed to write Ge’ez. Around the 4th century CE, vowel notation reshaped an older consonant alphabet into a syllable-based system, where consonant forms change with the vowel. Ethiopic is commonly linked to South Arabian inscriptional writing, but how direct that influence was remains debated; local languages and communities also shaped it.
